Bolts from the Blue: From Cold War Warrior to Chief of the Air Staff Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from P Griffiths -- An inspiring read : This excellent book chronicles the author's long and influential career in the Royal Air Force. From his descriptions of his initial officer training at the RAF College Cranwell, his numerous operational flying tours, especially on Hunter, Javelin and Harrier, he provides a wide ranging insight into the thrills and exhilaration for a fighter pilot during the Cold War years. Additionally, as a qualified flying instructor, responsible for Prince Charles' flying training, he gives an honest appraisal of HRH's undoubted flying ability. As his career progressed, his wide variety of senior national and NATO appointments, culminating in his time as Chief of the Air Staff, have enabled him to give us a fascinating and in-depth understanding of the conflicts involving the RAF, including the Falklands, the Gulf Wars and the Balkans. Furthermore, his honest, thought provoking and down to earth views and assessments of both inter service and political aspects of defence matters, especially the Strategic Defence Review 1997/98, are of exceptional value. From a personal point of view, I was lucky enough to serve in Aden with Sir Richard during his Hunter recce tour in 1965 and was also under his command when he was SASO HQ RAF Germany. His humility, humour and modesty, combined with his clear, balanced and communicative style of writing, make this a must read book for anyone interested in the RAF in general and in the machinations of decision making in the corridors of power. I enjoyed it immensely. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 26, 2018 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from R. Lloyd-Williams -- Enjoyable read : I was very keen to read this book by my former boss during my time in the RAF, when I was in charge of the outer office staff for the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) HQ Strike Command (High Wycombe) 1987/90. During my time with Sir Richard, I recall one particular occasion when I was asked to organise a Christmas meal at a local pub. We were allowed to bring our partners/spouses along to the to the meal and I brought my fiancé (now wife). During the evenings conversation my fiancé then asked Sir Richard why there were no female fighter pilots (as they had just started training female pilots on transport aircraft) to which he spluttered out that it was because they had periods. Then my fiancé replied that it could be a good thing for a fighter pilot! I could see before me my good relationship with the AVM slowly disappearing and going pale.
